Everyone here at RWM is excited to announce that we are working in collaboration with our new exhibition partner Forest Carbon, creating the RWM forest to help offset the carbon emitted over the course of the event. After nurturing our relationship over the previous year, we have agreed on a non-financial partnership with Forest Carbon to help reduce the environmental impact of our exhibition.
Forest Carbon support the creation of new woodland around the UK for organisations that want to reduce their impact on the environment. Alongside RWM, Forest Carbon’s long list of established partners include: Microsoft, Kier, and Clearabee, who all share a similar view on their corporate social responsibility (CSR).
RWM is the UK’s largest recycling and waste management exhibition with over 500 exhibitors and 22,000 visitors, so we understand the significant footprint left after our exhibition. The way we will combat this issue is by planting a tree for every new exhibitor in what will be called the RWM Forest (certified by the Woodland Carbon Code). It has been projected that by 2029, the RWM forest will be 10 acres big, containing approximately 6000 trees – which will capture 1500 tonnes of carbon dioxide. On this basis, RWM will be carbon neutral in just 10 years.
Why have we done this?
To offset the carbon produced as a result of our event. Whether it be the creation of our venue or the travelling it takes to get to and from the event, the total level of carbon produced, both directly and indirectly is vast. By planting the forest, we will be doing our bit to tackle the issues surrounding climate change.
Why is what we are doing important for the industry?
We believe corporate social responsibility is one of the most important functions of a business. We identified that RWM is in a position of influence – at the centre of one of the most important industries for the ongoing battle with climate change. With so many businesses coming together at the same place, there is not a better time or place to encourage other businesses to follow suit, becoming carbon neutral and creating a more sustainable, thriving business.
Why is what we are doing cool?
We are creating our own forest! We are directly contributing to the positive future of a sustainable, competitive recycling industry. By 2029 the number of trees planted will offset the carbon produced at RWM, and also help replace our depleting woodland. Furthermore it will contribute to reducing the carbon output of our other shows, including Future Resource. If the RWM forest does one thing, we hope it raises awareness to businesses that it is possible to become carbon neutral.
