Do’s and Don’ts for skip hire

We are often asked “What can I put in a skip?”
At Hurleys Skip Hire in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire we accept a variety of materials. Below is a list of what you can and can’t put into your skip.
Items that can be put in a skip
The following items and materials are accepted when put in your skip:
Bricks* (8yd or below)
Rubble* (8yd or below)
Soil* (8yd or below)
Hardcore* (8yd or below)
*These items are only suitable for 8yd skips and below due to their weight – larger skips full of them will cause the lorries to exceed their legal 18 tonne weight limit. We offer a grab hire service if you wish to dispose of larger quantities quickly.
Items that have a surcharge
The following items are accepted but carry the following surcharge when put in a skip. We must be notified in advance if you are planning on putting them into your skip.
Mattress – £10
Fridge/freezer (under counter) – £25
Fridge/freezer (full height ) – £35
Tyres – £6 each, inc. VAT
Fridges and Freezers need to be taken away by a special company to be safely de-gassed before disposal this is charged per unit please see list of surcharges for prices. Mattresses are also not allowed to go to landfill and are disposed of with specific people. Vehicle tyres are not allowed to go to landfill and are collected of by specialist – this is done by per unit price.
Hazardous or harmful items you cannot put into your skip
The following items and materials are not accepted if put in a skip:
Asbestos – classed as Dangerous Waste and should only be handled by specially trained and licensed companies who comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 wearing the appropriate safety clothing and PPE.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – WEEE
Gas Cylinders – as well as gas bottles & fire extinguishers – whatever size – are extremely dangerous and explosive even when they appear to be empty and should be handled with extreme care. They need to be de-gassed by a specialist before they can be safely disposed of.
Oil, petrol & diesel are all environmental contaminates with specific legal requirements on how they should be stored and disposed of which is not a service Hurley’s offer. You can get advice from your local council or the Oil Recycling Association on how to dispose of these products safely and legally.
Food waste – Our Licence permits us to accept Inert Wastes and Degradable Wastes. Food waste and Household waste from you kitchen bin, however, requires a different type of licence that insists waste to be fully processed within a matter of hours in specially licensed site.
Fires in skips – destroys the skip and can’t be used again – this will result in the cost of a new replacement skip being passed on
